You may have seen the first GROW game from Eyemaze, which can be found here:
GROW game ver.3
I played this game for hours, and ultimately had to cheat to max out all the items. Now there's a new GROW, and it's got an RPG theme! So cool, so addictive - click the entry title to go there.
You might not get it at first - that's the cool part of this game. You have to play a few times through to appreciate the subtleties and complex interactions. Give it some time - you'll be hooked soon enough.
Fortunately, this latest version is not as complicated or difficult as the first one - I solved it in just a few hours of experimenting. Still, it's satisfying to win. (See pic above for proof!) Email me if you need a clue...

I played it twice and am no closer* to understanding what's up with this.
I have to think that the order must be the significant factor in whether something works for you or against you. There don't seem to be other options, such as placement or post-placement movement of the widgets. I bet, too, that the widget are not stateless in that each new widget behaves based on ALL previously placed widgets.
Would it be a good strategy to just systematically alter the order of placement (first 1, 2, 3, then 1, 3, 2, etc.) and see what happens? Your mousing hand would get tired, but you could be listening to music while you did this.
* slight exaggeration; I was able to make bubbles come out of the tube dealy on the second try.
You are correct that order of placement is your only variable, but randomly changing the order is not an efficient strategy. Instead, observe the interactions between the widgets. They all have different "upgrades" and different numbers of max upgrades, and some need to be placed before others to achieve maximum level-up status. It takes far more than twice through to ascertain these, however, and many surprises await the persistent player.
I emailed you about this last night, only to read MacDoug today and see that you were a week ahead of me...
I did solve it in 45 mins, but it took a while to understand the RPG theme. So fricking cute! I just loved the whole "but sword, find armor" thing.
Tobias, the trick to the game is to realize that there are 8 objects, and each has a unique number of steps, 1 through 8. Study the results each time and learn what maxed out and what didn't. Put the ones that didn't max out lower in your order and bump up the ones that did. This is not so much a this-before-that thing (which the graphics imply) as a this-object-must-be-the-third-played thing.
